INDIANAPOLIS — Ben Davis students looking to get into broadcasting are getting a state-of-the-art education.

Ben Davis TV (BDTV) at the Area 31 Career Center is giving student scholars a taste of what it's like to work in television and the program is so successful that some students, like Kieran Simmer, are eaving beating out college students for internships.

"The internship I had this summer was offered to college juniors and seniors," Simmer said. "So the skills I've obtained here are so high and are usually obtained by people who are much older than me."

Like many BDTV grads, Simmer is continuing his education after Ben Davis. He starts at Ball State University this year where he'll work a video job while pursuing his degree in telecommunications.

Students in the BDTV program learn camera operations, news writing, editing and field and studio production, all the elements it takes to create a professional newscast like what you see on RTV6 each day.

The instructor, Dennis Goins, is even an RTV6 alumni.

"Our students are working in just about every TV station in Indianapolis, we have students working in film production all over the world," Goins said. "The expectation is very very high and because of the years we've been here and the success we've had we want to continue that legacy of greatness."
