JOHNSON COUNTY — Mowing the lawn for some kids is a chore, for others, it can be a business venture.

Students taking part in Central nine Career Center's Landscape Management program get the opportunity to make it just that.

The students do projects for homes, businesses and even maintain the campus while learning how to use equipment, keep it working and fix any problems they have along the way.

Students use push and ride mowers, tractors, trimmers and leaf blowers to maintain the school yard and other areas. They also work in a greenhouse where they grow plants, which they turn around and sell.

Students in the program also study aquaponics, raising tilapia and shrimp, which they'll take to the culinary school so they can use as well.

The program awards students with certifications and dual credits as well as a membership with Future Farmers of America.
