PRINCETON — Toyota needs more workers to build its popular Highlander SUV at its southwestern Indiana plant.

The automaker, which already has about 7,000 people at its facility north of Evansville in Princeton, on Friday announced plans to hire 150 additional workers.

Governor Eric Holcomb joined Toyota executives at the plant for the announcement. "Hoosier manufacturers are driving our economy forward, building the products that power our world every day," said the governor. "For more than 20 years, Toyota has been providing quality career opportunities and helping train Indiana's future workforce. "

The additional jobs are part of a new $700 million investment in Toyota's Princeton operations by the end of 2022. That's in addition to 400 positions that were created four years ago during a $600 million expansion.

According to Toyota, the investments will modernize the plant which produces nearly 400,000 Highlanders, Sequoias and Siennas each year.

The Indiana Economic Development Corporation says the ripple effect of the Princeton facility over the last 20 years has been the creation of more than 24,000 jobs.

"Part of Toyota's tremendous success in North America is building vehicles where we sell them," said Toyota executive Christopher Reynolds. "Our $1.3 billion investment at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indiana is further proof that our Hoosier workforce is rededicated to producing safer, high-quality vehicles our customers love to drive."
