MORGAN COUNTY — A 2-year-old boy has died after being shot in Morgan County early Thursday morning.

Morgan County Sheriff's Office Captain Brent Worth said deputies were called to the home in the 7600 block of North Kitchen Road around 6:30 a.m. for a shooting.

Arriving emergency responders found a little boy who had been struck by a bullet inside the home. The child was pronounced dead at the scene. He has been identified as Anthony Jones, from Indianapolis.

According to investigators, Anthony and his mother were "house-sitting" for relatives in Morgan County. The mother told police she had gone to the bathroom while her son was watching television and she heard a gunshot while she was gone. She ran back into the room and found Anthony lying on the floor.

The mother said the child had found her unsecured handgun, which accidentally discharged, striking and killing him. The child's father was not at the home when the shooting happened.

The child's death remains under investigation by the Morgan County Major Crimes Task Force. An autopsy is scheduled for Friday.
