5-year-old dies, 3-year-old critical after falling into pond in Boone County

BOONE COUNTY — A 5-year-old girl has died and another little girl is fighting for her life after they fell into a pond in Boone County Wednesday afternoon.

Emergency crews received a call around 11:45 a.m. from a home in the 11000 block of CR 500 S saying that two children had fallen into a pond and were not breathing. When crews arrived family members were already performing CPR on both children.

The Boone County Sheriff's office says a 3-year-old girl was transported to Riley Hospital for Children in critical condition. A 5-year-old girl was taken to Granville Wells Elementary to wait for a helicopter transport but did not survive her injuries. The child's identity is not being released until all family members have been notified.

The Boone County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate this incident, along with the Indiana Department of Child Services and Indiana Department of Natural Resources.

Also assisting was the Advance Police Department, Indiana State Police, Jamestown Police Department, Lebanon Police Department, Advance Fire Department, Boone County EMS, Stat Flight air ambulance, and the Boone County Coroner’s Office.

The drowning remains under investigation.
