INDIANAPOLIS — Nearly 600 staffers may lose their jobs when Indianapolis Public Schools ends its current contract with Durham School Services.

Durham School Services says its employees are being encouraged to apply for positions in the Indianapolis area and around the country. Official layoff notices have not yet been announced as the company's future is uncertain. It currently employs 250 drivers, 250 monitors and 30 administrative staff members, according to the company.

Additionally, the 135 staffers directly employed by IPS Transportation will be out of a job by June 30.

Starting July 1, First Student will operate all of the district's bus routes. The switch will save IPS $7 million, according to the district.
