INDIANAPOLIS — If the Indianapolis Animal Care Services shelter on South Harding Street was a hotel, there would be a "no vacancy" sign out front. But its not, so it has to make room for all animals that are ending up there.

"We are overflowing with animals and tonight we had to set up crates in the hallways to provide space for animals that continue to come into our shelter. We need your help to make space so we can get these crates out of the hallway," said Communications Officer Brandi Pahl.

Now is the time to adopt. The shelter at 2600 South Harding Street is open Saturday, Sunday and Monday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. It will then be closed on Christmas Eve and Christmas.

All adoptions are free during December with a donation of an item from the shelter's Holiday Wish List. Here it is:

  • Wet and dry dog food
  • Wet and dry cat food
  • Cat littler (pine and clay)
  • Kongs for dog treats
  • Jolly Balls for dogs
  • Nylabones
  • Paper towels and hand sanitizer
  • Marttingale collars
  • Skip leads

If you are not sure you're ready for a long-term pet commitment, the shelter has its two-week Cuddle Before You Commit Program. You can foster a dog or cat for two weeks before the adoption is finalized.
