INDIANAPOLIS — A couple of Indianapolis supermarkets are celebrating their makeovers.

The ALDI at 6691 East Washington Street on the city's east side held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Thursday to mark its reopening, following a remodeling.

The ribbon was also cut at the downtown, Needler's Fresh Market at 320 North New Jersey Street.

It has stayed open during what the company described as a "massive renovation to make it more user-friendly to downtown residents and workers."

Before it was a Needler's, the store was a Marsh and an O'Malia's, and going back many years, it was originally the downtown Sears store.

For a long time, it was the only supermarket downtown, but now faces stiff competition from a Kroger on West Michigan Street and the Whole Foods on East Market.
