INDIANAPOLIS — Officials say the fetal remains found on the Illinois property of a late abortion doctor all originated in Indiana.

Ulrich Klopfer, a doctor who performed abortions in Fort Wayne, South Bend and Gary, died earlier this month. When his family was cleaning out his Illinois home, they found 2,246 fetal remains.

Indiana Attorney General Curtis Hill said the abortions took place in Indiana between 2000 and 2002.

Hill's office is trying to learn more about how and why Klopfer transported the fetal remains across state lines to his house. With such a polarizing issue at hand, Hill said he doesn't think this should be a partisan issue.

"I don't think this is an issue of whether you're pro-life or pro-abortion," Hill said. "It's a matter of making sure that no matter what happens, we go through a proper procedure to afford a proper disposition of a living entity."

Hill said his office is working to return the fetal remains to Indiana.
