INDIANAPOLIS — Three people, including two kids, were killed and seven people were injured in a serious crash Sunday afternoon on Interstate-465 on the north side of Indianapolis.

Indianapolis Fire Department crews and other emergency personnel were called around 12 p.m. to the eastbound lanes of I-465 near Keystone Avenue on the report of a serious crash, IFD Battalion Chief Rita Reith said in a press release. When they arrived, they found a total of eight vehicles - six cars, one truck with a mobile home trailer, and a semi-truck, involved in a crash.

The driver of semi-truck, Bruce Pollard, 57, was arrested on the suspicion of three counts of reckless homicide and five counts of criminal recklessness causing injury, according to a tweet from ISP.

Pollard was employed by Weston Transportation of Sturgeon, Missouri, Reith said.

A woman and two kids were killed when their car caught on fire during the crash, Reith said.

A total of seven adults were transported to area hospitals, Reith said. Two were in serious condition and five were in good condition when they were transported from the crash.

Investigators believe the crash was caused by a 57-year-old semi-truck driver from Missouri when a car, who was not involved in the crash, cut him off, slammed on their brakes then sped away, Reith said. The truck driver said he was forced to slam on his breaks and hit the cars in front of him. Witnesses told investigators the driver failed to see the stopped traffic.

The IFD HazMat team was called to clean up leaking engine fluids from the truck, Reith said.
