COLUMBUS – Bartholomew County Sheriff Matthew A. Myers has once again expressed his support for body cameras in his department.

Myers first started calling for body cameras for the sheriff’s office in 2016. But at the time, the funding for his request wasn’t possible. With the renewed attention across the country on police accountability, Myers is again calling for body and vehicle cameras in a public letter.

“As Sheriff, I have made this a top priority for funding this year,” Myers said. “We have several viable quotes from nationally recognized suppliers and we have great input from other policing agencies that currently use this technology. We feel we are ready to make our case and move forward with this non-negotiable priority.”

Myers is urging all Bartholomew County residents to contact their county council representative to make their voice heard on body cameras. The Bartholomew County Council will have to approve any funding for body cameras.

“I also want to thank the many citizens and community leaders that are very vocal in their support of this improvement,” he said. “These voices along with our Deputies who have also voiced strong support make a win/win for our community.”
