COLUMBUS, Ind. -- Two years after a 17-year-old died in a crash, at least one official hopes a solar-powered LED stop sign will prevent the same thing from happening again.

Keegan Phillips was killed March 24, 2016, at the intersection of Marr Road and County Road 500 North in Columbus.

"It's on my mind every day," said Bruce Phillips, the father of Keegan Phillips.

To prevent another death, County Commissioner Dan Hollander came up with the idea for a stop sign with lights around it. The LED stop sign has 16 lights around the outside to increase visibility.

A regular stop sign costs about $60, but the solar-powered LED stop signs cost about $1,000 each.

"If it saves one life, it's going to pay for itself," Hollander said. "For every sign in the county, we're going to have to determine criteria for these to be justified."

In the last 15 years, there have been 30 crashes at that intersection, Hollander said.

At least one person is convinced the new signs will be a plus -- Bruce Philips.

"[The signs are] very worthwhile," Bruce said. "It is going to save lives."

The new signs are expected to be installed over the next 10 days.
