BOONE COUNTY, Ind. -- A Western Boone High School student was killed in a head-on crash Thursday morning in Boone County, Indiana.

The crash happened around 6:40 a.m. in the 220 block of W State Road 32, according to the Boone County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies say say a 2007 white Ford Focus, driven by Lance Oldham, 18, was traveling eastbound on SR 32 when, for an unknown reason, a 2003 gray Acura, driven by Lichin Liu, crossed into the eastbound lanes and struck the Focus head-on.

Oldham, Alissa Melton, 17, and Sydney Foster, 18, all students at Western Boone High School, were on their way to J. Everitt Light Vocational School in Indianapolis.

Foster was taken to Methodist Hospital, where she died from her injuries. She was in the backseat of the Focus with a seatbelt on, deputies say.

Foster was a four-year member of the girls' soccer team and and active member of 4-H. "As a lifelong resident of the Western Boone community, Sydney touched many lives with her outgoing personality and infectious smile," read a statement from the Western Boone Community School Corporation.

Melton, Oldham and Liu were taken to the hospital for treatment of their injuries.

Police initially said four other people were hospitalized, but later said four total people were taken to hospitals. Neither drugs nor alcohol are believed to be a factor.
