Fallen deputy Jacob Pickett's K-9 will live with his family, when the time is right.
Boone County Sheriff Mike Nielsen posted on Facebook Tuesday morning, writing that "Brik is heavy on my heart."
Sheriff Nielsen made sure that Brik was at the press conference Tuesday afternoon when formal charges were announced in connection with Dep. Pickett's fatal shooting:
Sheriff Nielsen said Brik is in good hands right now with another officer, and will be an integral part of the funeral ceremonies for Deputy Pickett, but when the time is right, the dog will move in with Deputy Pickett's surviving family members.
The sheriff said having Brik with the Pickett family came at Jacob's wife's request.
Sheriff Nielsen also shared the Guardians of the Night poem, which reads in part "Trust in me my friend, for I am your comrade."
