CARMEL, Ind. -- A popular police officer statue in Carmel that was damaged by a hit-and-run driver last November was returned to service on Monday.

The statue depicts a friendly police officer and is titled "Oh, It's You, Welcome." It sits on the Monon Trail at Main Street.

The statue was removed in last December after it was damaged during a hit-and-run accident on November 26. It cost $10,338 to repair the statue and the city has filed a claim with the driver's insurance company to pay for the damages.

“It is important that we protect the public’s assets and when damages are done like this, the cost of repairing the public infrastructure should be that of the person responsible for the damage,” said Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard.

The statue was returned to its home at the edge of the Monon Trail on Monday.

A spokesperson for the City of Carmel said the statue is a greeting to users of the Monon Trail and a reminder of Officer Frank Carey, the only Carmel police officer killed in the line of duty. Carey died in a shoot-out in 1900.
