INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indianapolis City-County Council voted to approve a controversial ordinance about missing weapons.
Under the proposal, if a stolen gun isn’t reported within 48 hours of discovering it missing or stolen, the owner could face a fine.
The ordinance was passed by a single vote, 15-14, at Monday night's council meeting.
The bill's sponsor, Kip Tew, D-District 2, said in July that the proposal isn't about gun control.
"This is going to be a tool helpful to law enforcement that had difficulty tracking these weapons when people commit crimes. And this is a way to check back to see where these guns originated from," Tew said.
While the council was heavily divided about the ordinance, it likely won't matter -- Mayor Greg Ballard is expected to veto it as soon as it reaches his desk.
The council also voted Monday night to grant themselves a 44 percent pay raise. It will be the council's first raise since 2002.
