GREENE COUNTY, Ind. – Three people from Newburgh, IN were killed in a car accident early Sunday morning. Officials at Castle High School said the family was on their way home from the Music for All band competition in downtown Indy.
Indiana State Police found a car and an inverted pickup truck on the west side of I-69 near the 103-mile marker.
Investigators said a 2015 Honda Civic, driven by David Rinehart, 46, was traveling southbound on the interstate when he struck a deer causing him to pull onto the outside shoulder and come to a stop.
Troopers say Mason Hartkey, 19, of Jasper was driving a 2006 Chevrolet southbound on I-69 and for unknown reasons, left the southbound lanes of traffic and entered the outside shoulder, striking the parked Honda.
The crash left three people dead: David Rinehart, 46, Ruth Rinehart, 74, and Sophie Rinehart, 17, all of Newburgh.
Josie Rinehart, 18, who was also in the Honda, suffered cuts and was taken to IU Health Bloomington.
Hartkey suffered a fractured arm and went to the hospital.
ISP said the investigation is ongoing.
According to officials at Bands of America, Sophie was a member of the Castle High School band and performed numerous times during the competition held at Lucas Oil Stadium.
