INDIANAPOLIS — Indianapolis wrapped up another violent weekend Sunday evening with a homicide just before midnight.
The numbers are a bit staggering when you put them together. So far this year — and we're just over six weeks in — there have been 33 individuals gunned down in the city. That's more than double the number of homicides reported at the same time last year and a dozen more than the highest of the previous five years.
In Indianapolis alone there were at least 10 people shot between Saturday and Sunday. Four of those people have died.
Breaking Down the Weekend
On Saturday, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers responded to 6 of those shootings which resulted in 7 people being shot.
Saturday morning began with a shooting in the 1300 block of N. Whitcomb Avenue. The victim in that case was taken to the hospital and the details surrounding the shooting remain under investigation.
Then around 11 a.m., officers responded to a double shooting in the 3800 block of Emerson Avenue. Adrian Love Jr. 28, was pronounced dead at that scene. A second victim was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. So far very few details have been released about the shooting and police do not have any suspects at this time.
At 2:30 p.m. officers were called to a shooting in the 2200 block of Hillside Avenue. One victim was taken to the hospital in critical condition, although IMPD PIO Sgt. Grace Sibley says that victim is expected to survive.
Another shooting just five hours later in the block of 200 N. Forest Avenue saw the weekends second homicide. The Marion County Coroner has identified that victim as Richard Williams Jr., 34. Again, police have no suspects at this time.
Two additional shootings just 20 minutes apart sent two more victims to the hospital Saturday evening just before midnight. The victims at 32 N. Lawndale Avenue and the 3500 block of Hyannis Port Drive were rushed to the hospital, their conditions are not known at this time.
Sunday morning, IMPD officers started the day by responding to Community North Hospital for a gunshot victim. Police say one person showed up at the hospital suffering from at least a single gunshot wound. Their condition is not known, but they are expected to survive.
The violent weekend ended Sunday evening with two people dead. Around 6 p.m., officers were called to the 5600 block of E. 36th Street for a report of a person shot. They found the victim, identified as Hanson Arnold, 33, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The second victim was located around 11:30 p.m. in the 3900 block of N. Hillside Avenue. Their identity has not been released at this time.
Police have not announced arrests in any of the nine shootings and they are asking anyone with information to come forward.
