INDIANAPOLIS -- Prosecutors filed a charge of murder against 18-year-old Marissa Huffman on Tuesday in connection with the death of her boyfriend last week.

Police were called to the 800 block of Birch Avenue on Friday shortly before 6 a.m. They arrived to find 21-year-old Joshua Tye suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Huffman was on scene when police arrived and was taken into custody on a preliminary charge of murder.

Prosecutors were granted a 72-hour continuance on Monday to allow for additional investigation before filing charges against her, which they did Tuesday afternoon.

According to a preliminary probable cause affidavit filed in the case, witnesses described hearing Huffman and Tye arguing, followed by a gunshot.

They told police Tye then said, “You shot me b****!”

Witnesses also reported hearing Tye say, “Why did you wake me up? Give me the gun,” prior to the shooting.

Tye, a graduate of Ben Davis High School, was the 22nd criminal homicide of 2018. As of this writing, the year stands at 24 criminal homicides.

Detectives said Huffman gave “numerous versions” of the events throughout her interview with police. While being processed, though, Huffman reportedly said, “I killed my boyfriend” – later adding, “He deserved to die. F*** him.”

Huffman is the first woman charged with murder in Marion County this year. Another woman, 33-year-old Monica Hampton, was arrested in connection to the fatal shooting of Jermaine Taylor in January, but prosecutors later decided not to file charges against her.

As of Tuesday evening, Huffman was being held at the Marion County Jail without bond. A hearing was scheduled for Thursday at 1:30 p.m. in Marion County Criminal Court 1.
