DANVILLE — A 24-year-old man walked into the Danville Police Department Sunday evening and confessed to a 2014 cold case murder out of Illinois.

Police say Kaylyn Whitaker, 20, died on Halloween night in 2014 under suspicious circumstances in Martinsville, Illinois.

Illinois State Police originally believed Whitaker had shot herself, according to WTHI News, but 10 months later ruled her death a homicide.

Whitaker's murder investigation remained cold until 8:30 p.m. Sunday when a man walked into the police department headquarters to confess, police said.

The man was interviewed by Danville Police and Illinois State Police investigators. A taped confession was also recorded before he was booked into the Hendricks County Jail where he will stay until his extradition back to Illinois.

RTV6 is not naming the 24-year-old man because he has not been officially charged.

The case remains under investigation by Illinois State Police and no other details about the murder have been released.
