COLUMBUS — Deputies with the Bartholomew County Sheriff's Department will soon be wearing body cameras, and their cars will also be equipped with video cameras.

In Columbus, the Bartholomew County Council gave the OK for the purchase of 57 body cameras and 54 car cameras.

"We will now begin the bidding process. Hopefully, every BCSO deputy will have a camera by the end of this year," said Sheriff Matt Myers. "I want to extend my thanks to Dana Vogt, Major Chris Lane, Captain Brandon Slate, Sergeant Jim Stevens and our Bartholomew County Commissioners for stepping up to make this project happen. My most sincere gratitude to all."

Body and car cameras have been is use for some time by the Columbus Police Department. About 60 police officers have had the body cameras since 2015. Car cameras have been in use since the early 1990's, according to the department's public information officer.
