ZIONSVILLE — A 23-year-old man was found dead along a Boone County trail early Sunday morning.

Authorities were called around 6:15 a.m. on the reports of shots fired in the area, according to Boone County sheriff Sgt. Chris Burcham. Zionsville Police Department officers searched the area, but did not locate anything.

Around 7:15 a.m., a resident called 911 and reported they found a body near the retention pond near the Zionsville Rail Trail.

Samuel Bennett, 23, of Zionsville, appears to have died from gunshot wounds, according to Sgt. Burcham.

The Zionsville Rail Trail is a popular walking spot, so Zionsville Police Chief Robert Knox says they are asking people to be cautious if they are out in the area.

"I would be very worried right now," Chief Knox said. "We don't have this solved, we don't know exactly what happened, so absolutely you want to stay on your toes and watch yourself anytime you are out in public."

So far, no arrests have been made.
