INDIANAPOLIS — A disassembled gun was confiscated from a Nevada man at the Indianapolis International Airport on Monday, according to the Transportation Security Administration.
TSA officers detected a disassembled Taurus G-3 9mm firearm, two magazines, a box of ammunition, and nine loose bullets during an x-ray screening around 1:45 p.m. at a security checkpoint. TSA officers redirected travelers in the screening line and contacted the Indianapolis Airport police.
According to TSA's release, Airport police confiscated the Nevada man's gun and ammo and cited him. The amount of the citation was not readily available at the time of the release.
"A disassembled firearm is still a prohibited item, and our officers remain vigilant to seek out these items," Aaron Batt, TSA's Indiana Federal Security Director, said.
Even with a state-issued concealed firearm permit, guns are prohibited items in airports. Passengers can, however, pack a disassembled gun into a checked bag inside of a locked, hard-sided case if declared at check-in — before reaching security or the inside of the airport.
In addition to possible criminal charges, TSA can also assess civil penalties of up to $13,333 for weapon violations. A typical first offense for carrying a handgun into a checkpoint is $4,100.
This gun is the 22nd firearm to be detected by TSA officers at the Indianapolis Airport this year. Last year, a total of 62 firearms were confiscated by TSA at the airport.
