MADISON COUNTY — A man is dead after a crash following a high-speed chase in Madison County early Wednesday morning.

The Madison County Sheriff's Office says the pursuit began on SR 67 near CR 300 east when a Chesterfield Police Department officer attempted to stop a vehicle that was clocked driving over 100 miles per hour. During the pursuit, the driver turned onto 300 East and then onto Mounds Road, but turned around at the dead end. The officer attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver drove around the officer's cruiser and down through a ditch before speeding off.

Shortly after that maneuver, investigators say the officer terminated his the pursuit because of the curves in the road and the speeds the driver was exceeding. Shortly after the pursuit was terminated, the driver appears to have lost control and left the roadway just west of the Mounds State Park entrance and struck a tree, according to the sheriff's office.

By the time the officers arrived on scene, an 18-year-old passenger had climbed out of the vehicle and was found nearby. That person was taken to St. Vincent Hospital in fair condition.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity has not been released.

The crash and the incident leading up to it are under investigation by the Madison County Sheriff's Office and Indiana State Police.
