INDIANAPOLIS — A former Warren Central teacher and softball coach has been charged with sexual misconduct with a student.

According to court documents filed Thursday in Hamilton Circuit Court, Brittney K. Mang is charged with two counts of sexual misconduct with a minor and one count of child solicitation. A warrant has been issued for Mang's arrest.

The charges stem from an alleged sexual relationship between Mang, a former Spanish teacher and junior varsity softball coach at Warren Central High School, and a 15-year-old student at the school.

In a probable cause affidavit filed Thursday, a detective with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said IMPD began investigating after the Indiana Department of Child Services was notified by the student's mother that she had discovered text messages between her daughter and Mang that were of a sexual nature.

The victim's mother told the detective she was afraid of what was going on because she had allowed her daughter to spend a significant amount of time with Mang, including several overnights and a 4-day stint at Mang's home in Hamilton County.

According to the court documents, the relationship between Mang and the victim changed in April and became sexual in nature and Mang reportedly engaged in sexual conduct with the victim during the visits at Mang's house.

Dennis Jarrett, the director of media and community relations for Metropolitan School District of Warrent Township, said Mang, a three-year teacher at the school, resigned her positions May 3.

MSD of Warren Township issued the following statement through Jarrett:

We have been notified of the results of the investigation concerning charges brought against one of our former employees. Throughout the investigation we have cooperated with authorities to the extent we were called upon. Although we cannot respond to the allegations specifically, we want everyone to know that we take seriously the responsibility and trust parents bestow on us to educate and protect their children when in our care. When an individual is accused of violating that trust, it should be, and is, an affront to us all.
We will continue to be vigilant in our purpose to provide a safe and quality educational experience to the 12,000-plus students who come through our doors on a daily basis and will hold all of our employees to the highest standard of care.
