LYNN — A nearly six-hour-long standoff between a shooter and police Friday in Randolph County is over and the injured gunman has been taken to a hospital.
Indiana State Police said three officers received minor, non-life threatening wounds from shrapnel during the standoff.
"I know there were several gunshots fired into the police vehicles outside the home as well as fired at officers around the perimeter," ISP Sgt. John Bowling told WKEF.
At 3 p.m. Friday, a Randolph County Sheriff's Department deputy, along with the Lynn Town Marshal and Deputy Marshal responded to a house in the 800 block of West Church Street in Lynn on a report of a domestic situation between John Resetar, 44, and his wife, state police said.
While the officers spoke to the Resetar's wife, Resetar allegedly shot at them with a rifle. The officers retreated and one was hit with shrapnel from one of the rifle rounds, according to state police.
“I heard quite a few gunshots, several rounds of shots being fired, and it’s just very scary,” neighborhood resident Bonnie Hobbs told The Associated Press.
Other officers from surrounding counties arrived and set a perimeter around the house as Resetar allegedly continued firing at police with officers firing back. State police said Resetar allegedly fired several rounds into the police vehicles that were left outside his house.
Two other officers were hit with shrapnel from the rifle rounds before Resetar allegedly stopping firing around 4:15 p.m.
"There's no place to hide," Bowling said. "If you're an officer on the perimeter, there's very little cover to offer to officers so officers did a great job. No one was seriously injured."
SWAT officers entered the house around 8 p.m. and found Resetar downstairs in the home unconscious and suffering from a gunshot wound, Bowling said.
Resetar was transported to Reid Hospital in Richmond and was later transferred to a hospital in Indianapolis, Bowling said.
The Indiana State Police, Randolph County Sheriff's Department and Lynn Police Department were at the scene along with officers from Delaware County, Hancock County, Wayne County, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department and units from several surrounding cities and towns.
Lynn is located in Randolph County, north of Richmond, along the state line with Ohio.
