INDIANAPOLIS — A deputy chief of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department will soon be leaving his post.

The city of Asheville, North Carolina announced that Christopher Bailey has been selected as the city’s next police chief.

His first day on the job as will be July 29.

Bailey has been known as one of the department’s leaders when it comes to encouraging community policing and currently oversees IMPD’s Criminal Investigations division. He has been with IMPD for 20 years.

Bailey is best known for being outspoken when it comes to violence, frequently addressing the media at crimes scenes and being very blunt about how any amount of violence in the city is unacceptable.

Bailey also served as the city’s North District commander during a time when violence was breaking out in the Butler-Tarkington and Crown Hill neighborhoods on the city’s near north side. Working with community groups and clergy in the area, Bailey helped turned the neighborhoods around and reduce crime dramatically.
