INDIANAPOLIS — Police across the state are cracking down aggressive drivers in March in the hopes of making the roads a little bit safer as we head into spring.

Aggressive driving is nothing new, but recently things have been escalating in Indianapolis. Police are already investigating one deadly shooting this year that was the result of road rage, and multiple other road rage incidents.

This month, the Marion County Safety Partnership will be conducting increased patrols for aggressive drivers.

IMPD says failing to yield the right of way is one of the top causes of crashes that lead to injuries and death. Another is following too closely and unsafe lane movement.

Other aggressive driving violations include:

  • Unsafe Speed
  • Speed to Fast for Weather Conditions
  • Disregarding Traffic Signals or Signs
  • Improper Passing, Turning or Lane Usage

This month, law enforcement officers across the state are hoping to crack down on the problem.

Studies show that young drivers, particularly young men, are more likely to engage in unsafe driving behaviors.

“The rules of the road are not only the law, they are designed to help everyone reach their destination safely and efficiently,” said Captain Fred Ilnicki of IMPD. “By warning drivers of aggressive driving enforcement, our aim is to prevent unsafe driving and save lives.”

AAA offers the following tips to avoid road rage while driving:

  • Don’t Offend: Things like cutting a car off, driving slow in the left lane or tailgating and gesturing to other drivers can make them angry.
  • Don’t Engage: Steer clear, avoid eye contact and get help if you think you need it.
  • Adjust Your Attitude: Forget winning, put yourself in the other driver’s shoes. If you think you have anger issues, ask for help.

The following agencies are some that make up the Marion County Safety Partnership:

  • Indianapolis Metropolitan Police
  • Speedway Police
  • Beech Grove Police
  • Indiana State Police
  • Indiana University Police
  • Cumberland Police
  • Airport Police
  • Lawrence Police
