INDIANAPOLIS — Indianapolis police say a murder suspect who led to a lockdown at two local schools and a search that spanned several blocks on the city's southeast side is now in custody.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Public Information Officer Aaron Hamer said officers first tried to conduct a traffic stop on a vehicle near Fountain Square around 7 a.m.

Hamer says that vehicle refused to stop and led police on a brief chase in the area and eventually pulled over near Prospect and State streets. The passenger in that vehicle jumped out and fled on foot.

After speaking with the driver, police determined that the man who ran from the scene was Derrik Warner, 26. Warner was wanted in connection to an investigation earlier this month on Minnesota Street where Richard Pettry, 42, was killed.

Police made a perimeter and brought in K-9 officers to help locate Warner. Two nearby schools were also placed on lockdown as a precaution.

After searching homes in the area, the Warner was taken into custody at a home near Minnesota and State streets, according to Hamer.

Other people who were inside the home at the time were also taken down to police headquarters for questioning. No other arrests have been made.

Thursday's incident as well as the murder remain under investigation by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.
