INDIANAPOLIS — Indianapolis has a serious violent crime problem. There have been 133 homicide cases since the first of the year. compared to 88 at the same time last year. Indianapolis is on track for the most murders ever in a single year.

The current state of public safety in the city will be the subject of the first-in-a-series of public meetings
this Thursday. The meeting comes after a couple weeks of soliciting public feedback from an online survey on public safety—part of the city's partnership with the New York University School of Law Criminal Justice Lab.

“We continue to listen to our residents on how they perceive public safety throughout their communities and the changes they are expecting,” said Mayor Joe Hogsett. “These community conversations are our unceasing commitment to the mission in creating equitable and fair enforcement of the law and safer neighborhoods.”

The meeting will be held virtually and will include a first look at the initial survey results as well as data that has been gathered by the NYU School of Law Criminal Justice Lab. The session will offer opportunities for community input on policy and safety priorities, and for residents to share their experiences.

The first session will be hosted by several members of the city-county council. Deputy Mayor Dr. David Hampton will serve as the emcee for the community conversation. Also taking part is City-County Council Majority Leader Maggie Lewis, along with counselors Leroy Robinson, Monroe Gray, John Barth, Crista Carlino, and Jessica McCormick.

The Zoom meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. Here is the information you need to take part:
