LAWRENCE, Ind. -- A lockdown for two Lawrence schools was lifted Friday afternoon about an after hour after police chase ended in the area.

According to a spokesperson with the Metropolitan School District of Lawrence Township, the Early Learning Center at Winding Ridge and Winding Ridge Elementary School were under a lockdown. The lockdown lifted just before 2 p.m.

A spokesperson with the Lawrence Police Department said the chase originated in Hancock County, where a suspect was driving a stolen vehicle. The chase eventually made its way to Marion County, where they bailed from the vehicle near 46th Street and German Church Road.

Officers found a safe typically used to store firearms in the backseat of the vehicle. The safe was empty, but police aren't sure if the suspect is armed. A perimeter was set up in the area, but it was lifted at about 2:15 p.m. The suspect was not found.

The two schools that were on a lockdown are located near the intersection of 46th Street and N. 800 West., just east of German Church Road.
