Fires set in the streets of downtown Indianapolis as protests continue Saturday night

INDIANAPOLIS — Protests turned violent again Saturday night in Indianapolis with property being vandalized and fires set downtown.

Protesters are started gathering again Saturday afternoon.

7:14 a.m.
IndyGo announced bus schedules will resume as normal Sunday, but some delays and detours are possible downtown.

6:57 a.m.
Three people died and two others were injured overnight as Indianapolis police responded to multiple shootings.

6:55 a.m.
Firefighters were called to a fire at around 12:45 a.m. at the CVS Pharmacy at 175 N. Illinois St. It was the second night in a row the store had been damaged by fire. Nobody was injured in the fire that took nearly an hour to extinguish.

1:25 a.m.
Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett released a statement on Twitter.

Since it ended, a small group of people have chosen to diminish that activism through inexcusable violence. It is unacceptable, and it must stop.

A person was shot and killed near North Talbot and East Market streets, IMPD Officer Michael Hewitt said in an email.

Police now say no one was shot in the 200 block of East Market Street.

At least one person has been shot near Alabama and New York streets, IMPD Officer Michael Hewitt said in an email. The condition of the victim is not known at this time.

There is a fire in an intersection downtown.

Glass can be heard breaking in parts of downtown.

People sitting in traffic are honking their horns. Some people are holding signs out their car windows.

A few protesters can be seen walking through the traffic.

Protesters have scattered through different parts of downtown Indianapolis. Tear gas can be seen in some areas. It's not clear where the protesters are planning on going or doing next.

A statement on the protests was just released by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department on Twitter.

Unfortunately, IMPD officers had to disperse a crowd at Market and Alabama Streets after projectiles were repeatedly thrown at officers and windows were broken at government buildings.

At least one person appears to have been arrested.

Police are now saying the protest is no longer peaceful and are asking people to leave. Some officers have gas masks on.

Protesters are linking arms to shut down Market Street in front of the City-County Building.

A protester told us they are protesting against police brutality and wanted to come and make their voice heard. They said they plan on staying peaceful.

"All races are here tonight," the protester said.

The protesters have stopped in front of the City-County Building.

Protesters are now marching down Mass Ave.

Crowds are now walking in the streets and chanting "join us" to people in nearby apartments. It's not clear where the group is going now.

The Indiana State Police helicopter is monitoring the protests.

Protesters are now moving towards the Salesforce Tower. Some are standing on top of parked cars.

It's 7 p.m. and city leaders were hoping the protests would disperse now, but hundreds are still gathering.

Protesters are now gathered at the Indiana War Memorial.

One protester says they protesting for justice for food insecurity, wealth inequality, and the recent deaths involving police. They said they think it is important for people to show up and support the protests.

People at the Indian War Memorial are holding signs saying "Justice for George Floyd" and "Black Lives Matter."

4:53 p.m.
Destiny Brown says protesters want to address the death Dreajson Reed and are calling for the release of the name of the officers involved in his death.

Reed was shot and killed by and Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officer earlier this month. The incident was streamed live on Facebook.

Protesters are also standing in solidarity with other protests happening across the nation.

Brown said the group plans to be at the City-County Building around 5:30 p.m. to know they want to hold city leaders accountable.

Brown said the group wants to remain non-violent and make sure their voices are heard and people feel safe.

Water, medical supplies and masks are being provided to protesters who may need them.

Brown is encouraging people who come to join them remain non-violent and focus on their message.
