Man arrested after fleeing Indianapolis crash, firing shots

INDIANAPOLIS — A 33-year-old man was arrested Sunday after fleeing a crash witnessed by a Marion County sheriff's deputy.

According to a report from the Marion County Sheriff's Office, it happened around 3:18 p.m. Sunday when a deputy witnessed a crash at East 16th Street and North Emerson Avenue on the city's east side. After checking on the injured female driver of the second vehicle, the deputy began a foot pursuit after the other driver attempted to flee the scene.

Deputies said a passerby saw the suspect fleeing and tried to assist by tackling the man. During the altercation, the suspect fired two shots. The suspect, a 33-year-old man, was then taken into custody following a short physical altercation with the deputy.

According to the sheriff's office, a semi-automatic pistol and what is suspected to be crack cocaine and methamphetamine were recovered at the scene. The vehicle the man was driving was also determined to be stolen.

The suspect is being held in the Marion County Jail on suspicion of criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon, attempted aggravated assault, dealing in narcotics, possession of narcotics, leave the scene of an accident with bodily injury and resisting law enforcement.

The woman injured in the crash was taken to an area hospital in stable condition.

The incident remains under investigation by the Marion County Sheriff's Office and the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.
