INDIANAPOLIS -- An Indianapolis man was sentenced to four years in prison Tuesday for the May 2017 hit-and-run that killed 90-year-old Marion Jones.

Maurice Webster, 47, was found guilty in December of the leaving the scene of a crash at the intersection of Illinois and 24th streets.

He was sentenced on Tuesday to four years in prison, to be followed by one year of probation.

Webster turned himself in at the Marion County Jail on May 14, 2017, hours after the crash that claimed Jones’ life.

According to a probable cause affidavit filed in the case, Webster’s daughter told him he needed to contact the police after he told her he had hit someone while driving.

Webster’s daughter called 911 and told them she believed her father was involved in the crash, and then arranged for a friend to transport Webster back to the scene.

Instead, according to the affidavit, Webster got out of the friend’s car on the way there and walked off.

He later told police he walked to a liquor store, bought a bottle of vodka and drank it.

Webster and his family eventually showed up at the jail approximately five hours after the crash to turn himself in.

According to the affidavit, Webster told police he had four beers and had been smoking marijuana shortly before the crash.

Investigators determined Webster’s driving privileges had been suspended following an OWI conviction in July 2008.
