Man shot by officers after leading police on chase in Delaware County

MUNCIE — A Randolph County man was shot Friday night after he led Delaware County authorities on a slow-moving chase and exchanged gunfire with officers.

The suspect, a 38-year-old white male from Farmland, was wounded after exchanging gunfire with Delaware County sheriff's deputies before 10 p.m. at County Road 900 North east of Walnut Street, according to a news release from Indiana State Police.

After he was shot, the man got back into his car and continued driving before he stopped on County Road 900 North east of County Road 175 East.

According to state police, the man was treated at the scene by officers and emergency medical personnel and transported to IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital. His condition was not available.

The incident began before 9 p.m. when Delaware County dispatch received a call saying there was a man sitting in his car and drinking beer in a parking lot on Wheeling Avenue in Muncie, according to Indiana State Police.

When Muncie police officers, the man refused to show his hands and said he had a weapon, state police said.

He drove his Honda Accord out of the parking lot and turned east onto McGalliard Road and then north onto Walnut Street while keeping his speed under 20 mph. One of the car's front tires was deflated after the man spike strips.

State police said he continued driving north while "stopping and starting several times" before he turned east onto County Road 900 North, got out of his car and fired shots at officers while standing in the road.

"Officers were forced to return fire and struck the suspect, who got back in his car and accelerated east, finally stopping on CR 900 N. just east of CR 175E," state police said in a news release.

According to state police, the man was wanted on a warrant in Grant County for possession of methamphetamine and on another warrant in Nevada for failure to appear in a drug case.

Indiana State Police are investigating the incident.
