INDIANAPOLIS — The father of a 5-year-old boy who shot and killed another child in June 2017 will not go to prison as part of his sentence.
On Thursday, a Marion Superior Court judge sentenced P.L. Gage, now 29, to serve two years on work release with Marion County Community Corrections, four years on home detention with 10 years suspended on probation, according to court records.
Gage pleaded guilty in August to one count of neglect of a dependent resulting in serious bodily injury stemming from the June 2017 shooting death of Mykah Jackson, 9. As part of a plea agreement with prosecutors two additional charges — neglect of a dependent resulting in death and neglect of a dependent — were dismissed.
Police said Mykah was playing in Gage's apartment with Gage's 5-year-old son and another child when Mykah was shot in the face. He later died at a hospital.
According to court documents, Mykah was visiting his father, Michael Jackson, in Indianapolis for the summer.
Michael Jackson told police his son was playing with Gage's 5-year-old son and another boy while the two adults were visiting in a front room when they heard a gunshot. The men ran to the bedroom and found Mykah laying on the floor with a gunshot wound to his face.
Gage told police he gun was sitting on his dresser under a pile of clothing when the kids found it. Gage also told police he intended to move it to the kitchen and out of reach but had forgotten.
