INDIANAPOLIS — The man accused of shooting and killing an Indianapolis police officer last week reportedly told officers he thought someone was trying to get him when he opened fire through an apartment door.

According to court documents, officers were dispatched to an apartment in the 1800 block of Edinburge Square at 2:47 p.m. on Thursday on report of a disturbance between a man and a woman. According to the dispatch notes, the man thought someone was trying to kill him.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Officer Breann Leath was one of four officers who responded to the scene. When a fellow officer knocked on the door of the third-floor apartment, Elliahs Dorsey opened fire through the door, striking Leath.

As the other three officers were retreating, they attempted to remove her but were unable. After officers formed a rescue team, they found a second woman who had been shot in the apartment building hallway. They were then able to rescue Leath and other officers took Dorsey, 27, into custody.

In an interview with police, Dorsey said he slept at the woman's apartment overnight. When he woke up on Thursday, he reportedly smoked marijuana. According to court documents, Dorsey said he had been feeling different and felt like the woman was trying to set him up.

According to court documents, Dorsey reportedly heard the woman talking on the phone and giving someone the address to the apartment and telling the person on the phone "you need to come get him." Not long after that there was a knock at the apartment door and Dorsey started shooting through the apartment door.

Dorsey reportedly told police the woman went out the door and started running down the stairs and he shot her. Dorsey said police officers came up about 90 seconds later. He put the gun down and put his hands up and dropped to his knees.

According to the court documents, Leath died of two gunshot wounds to the head.

Dorsey has been charged with murder, four counts of attempted murder, criminal confinement and battery.
