LAFAYETTE — Lafayette police have identified the officer who was shot in the back by another officer on Tuesday.

The department said Lane Butler, a three-year veteran of the department, remains in serious, but stable, condition at Franciscan Health Lafayette East.

"Officer Butler is an amazing public servant and is a dedicated and valued member of our agency," Chief Patrick Flannelly said in a statement. "She is demonstrating tremendous courage and strength and she fight to recover from her injury."

Police said Butler was shot in the back after another officer accidentally discharged his weapon when a dog jumped on him during a criminal mischief investigation.

The incident happened just before 11 a.m. in the 800 block of N. 9th Street. During the course of their investigation, officers received information about a person who was wanted at the same location they were responding.

While investigating, a police say a large, aggressive dog charged the officers and one of them discharged their weapon. That bullet struck the other officer in the back.

On Wednesday, Lafayette police identified the other two officers who were on the scene as Officer Kurt Sinks and Officer Aaron Wright. Initial findings show that the round that struck Officer Butler came from Officer Wright's department issued handgun, according to information released by the police department.

Officer Wright is a two year veteran with the Lafayette Police Department. He has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the findings in the internal investigation and the shooting review board, per department policy.

The dog involved in the incident was not injured.
