KOKOMO — One person is dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in the parking lot of the Markland Mall in Kokomo on Friday.
According to a release from the Kokomo Police Department, officers responded to the area of Imperial Drive and Saratoga Boulevard at 2:27 p.m. to check on two people who were reportedly passed out inside a white Chrysler PT Cruiser. An officer saw the PT Cruiser traveling westbound on Savoy Drive into the Markland Mall parking lot and stopped it for questioning.
The officer found the driver had an active warrant for his arrest in Tippecanoe County for a parole violation. The man was asked to exit the vehicle when he pulled out a handgun.
The officer backed away and the driver said he would shoot himself, which he did while sitting in the car. The passenger was not injured.
