CARROLL COUNTY — A person is dead after a crash in an off-road vehicle early Saturday morning in Carroll County.

Indiana Conservation Officers and emergency personnel were called around 1:20 a.m. on the report of an off-road vehicle crash in the 5000 block of South 100 West, according to a press release from Indiana DNR. When they arrived, they found a passenger unresponsive and on the ground after being ejected.

The passenger, Derek Hufford, 25, of Lafayette, was killed in the crash, according to a press release updated Sunday afternoon by Indiana DNR.

The operator, Quentin Smith, 25, of Lafayette, told authorities he was going northbound when he tried to turn into a driveway, missed, crossed a ditch, lost control and the ORV rolled, according to the release. He was taken to IU Health Arnett Hospital in Lafayette for evaluation.

Smith was charged on the suspicion of operating while intoxicated, operating while intoxicated causing death, operating an ORV at an unreasonable speed and operating an ORV under the influence of alcohol, according to the release.

Authorities say the operator and the passenger weren't wearing helmets or seatbelts at the time of the crash, according to the release.
