INDIANAPOLIS — A person killed Saturday night in a shooting on the city's east side is the 31st homicide in the city for 2020.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers were called to the 200 block of Forest Avenue for a report of a person shot. Arriving officers found a person suffering from a gunshot wound. That person was taken to the hospital in critical condition but they later died.

The details surrounding the shooting remain under investigation.

"It's a lot for one day, it has not been a good year period," said IMPD Major Harold Turner. "Let's just be blunt about it. We have not started off the year in anyway fashion at how we had hoped. But know this - the police department, the homicide detectives, crime lab, everyone involved - we will continue to work. We will continue to fight. And we will continue to try to get a hold of this crime. That being said though, and you've heard me say this before, but maybe not in this fashion - we need help from our citizens."

Saturday night's homicide becomes the 31st for the city of Indianapolis in 2020 and the second for the day. One person was killed in a double shooting Saturday morning on North Emerson Avenue on the city's northeast side. The second victim in that shooting was in critical condition, but police say they are expected to survive.

Another person was shot Saturday afternoon in the 2000 block of Hillside Avenue. The victim of that shooting was also taken to the hospital in critical condition, but is expected to survive.

No identities have been released at this time.
