Update, 9 a.m. July 19: On Sunday morning, the Marion County Fair's board of directors decided to cancel the last day of the fair, fair officials confirmed.

INDIANAPOLIS — Police said there was a large fight involving more than 100 people that preceded one person being shot at the front gates of the Marion County Fair on Saturday night.

Police said Marion County Sheriff's Office deputies were escorting problem juveniles from the fairgrounds when 100 to 150 juveniles and adults rushed the fair gate and forced their way inside. After getting inside, multiple fights began to break out and as police attempted to get the situation under control there were multiple shots fired resulting in one juvenile being shot.

According to Officer Genae Cook, of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, one person was shot. The victim is stable and was taken to an area hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

A report from IMPD said a second person, a juvenile female, was transported to the hospital with what was at first believed to be a gunshot injury, but it was determined she suffered an abrasion.

Detectives with the IMPD Aggravated Assault Unit are on scene handling the investigation. Cook said they are talking with witnesses and individuals who were detained who may be persons of interest.

Cook said multiple firearms were recovered at the scene by IMPD officers and deputies from the Marion County Sheriff's Office.

"As the evening went on the sheriff's office has made numerous arrests tonight," Maj. Michael Hubbs, of the Marion County Sheriff's Office, said. "There are numerous juveniles that have been arrested. I can't give you a number count yet."

Investigators are still working to determine how the firearms that were collected are involved in the incident.

Hubbs said during the melee a sheriff's deputy was injured when a chemical spray was used.

Hubbs said there thousands of juveniles at the fair on Saturday. Most were unaccompanied by adults, he said.

"There was literally 100 to 150 juveniles and they just rushed the gate," Hubbs said. "I think we had probably 15 to 20 officers between the sheriff's office and IMPD at the gate and they rushed the gate."

Hubbs said the gate was backed up for admission at the time.

Prior to Saturday night there have only been five arrests at the fair, Hubbs said. All of the arrests during the fair have been juveniles, he said.

The incident prompted the Marion County Fairgrounds to close early for the remainder of the night, according to a Facebook post.
