Police reaching out to public to help solve Downtown Canal murder

INDIANAPOLIS — Indianapolis police are asking the public for help in solving a recent murder on the Downtown Canal.

On July 5, at 3:30 a.m., 24-year-old Jessica Doty-Whitaker was shot at 729 Canal Court. She died a few hours later.

Since the shooting, detectives have been studying security camera images taken around the time of the murder. Police say the people in these photos may be witnesses and/or persons of interest in Doty-Whitaker's death.

The murder was one of two on the canal in recent weeks.

In late-June, 14-year-old Curtis White was killed.

The two killings have raised public concern over the safety of the canal at night.
