INDIANAPOLIS -- Surveillance cameras recorded a man accused of breaking into several garages in the Holy Cross neighborhood just east of Interstate 70 near Michigan Street overnight, and police are hoping someone will identify him.

Carla Roberson and her husband woke up around 3:30 a.m. Monday to two loud bangs coming from their garage. She said her husband looked out the window and saw someone breaking into their garage's service door. He ran down and told her to call the police.

"My husband saw the person who broke in take off down the alley with our daughters bike," Roberson said. "He told the police which way he went. They went after him and found the bike down the alley."

Police are investigating at least nine burglaries in the last 24 hours in Holy Cross. The thefts all took place between 1 and 6 a.m.

In the meantime, police said residents would write down the serial numbers of their property, so if the thief tries to sell stolen items to a pawn shop, they can catch him.

Police shared some tips residents can use to avoid being a target, including not leaving valuables in cars and making sure the area near your garage or house is well-lit.
