INDIANAPOLIS — An initiative to help people stop running from the law will now be offered year-round in Marion County.

The Safe Surrender Program was temporarily implemented in 2016 and 2017, but is now permanent.

A person with a warrant can turn themselves in at familiar places, like churches.

Pastor Stephen Clay said surrendering to a clergy member is a safer option.

"I think the reason why anyone would want to turn themselves in is because the sheriff's office and IMPD are going to do what they do,” Clay said. “They're gonna come and they're gonna serve those warrants. I've been out on those details. That's not something you want to expose your family, your friends or your loved ones to."
