WEST TERRE HAUTE — Indiana State Police are investigating after a person died Saturday morning in an officer-involved shooting in Vigo County.
According to information from Indiana State Police, the person died after he allegedly exchanged gunfire with police at 8 a.m. near West Illana Drive and South Crews Place in West Terre Haute.
Vigo County Central Dispatch received a 911 call at approximately 7:20 a.m. regarding a suspicious person in a rural area of West Terre Haute. Vigo County Sheriff's Office deputies found a vehicle down a lane that had its rear window busted out, a news release from state police said.
A person allegedly began shooting at deputies after the deputies used a PA system to ask the person to come out of a wooded area, the release said. The deputies took cover and called for assistance saying shots had been fired.
Other law enforcement arrived and set up a perimeter to the north of the deputies while the person allegedly continued to fire randomly at officers.
State police said officers found the person firing the shots and ordered them to put their weapon down and show their hands. That is when state police said the person pointed the weapon at officers and fired directly at them.
Gunfire was exchanged, and the person was found later found deceased after the Terre Haute Special Response Team arrived in an armored vehicle, state police said.
The person's identity has not been released, and the Vigo County Coroner's Office will perform an autopsy.
One sheriff's deputy suffered a sprained ankle, but state police said none of the other officers reported injuries.
