INDIANAPOLIS — A suspect involved in a police pursuit near downtown Indianapolis crashed off an Interstate 70 embankment Wednesday morning.

In video captured by an Indiana Department of Transportation traffic camera, the vehicle can be seen cutting in front of and narrowly missing a collision with a semi tractor trailer. The vehicle then crashes through a safety barrier and down an embankment from the eastbound lanes of Interstate 70 near North Sherman Drive.

Sgt. Jim Gillespie, a spokesman for Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, said the suspect is in custody and was taken to an area hospital in critical condition following the pursuit.

Gillespie said southeast district officers were dispatched to a possible stolen vehicle shortly before 9:40 a.m. Wednesday. A relative of the vehicle owner spotted the vehicle on the east side of Indianapolis and officers found the vehicle near English and Bradley avenues. Police said the vehicle was reported stolen on Jan. 21.

As soon as police got behind the vehicle, the driver sped off, getting on Interstate 65 northbound through the split and onto eastbound Interstate 70 where the vehicle left the road and crashed near Sherman Drive, Gillespie said.

The male driver was ejected from the vehicle and was taken to Eskenazi Hospital in critical condition, police said.
