INDIANAPOLIS — "These are adults acting like children."
That is how an Indianapolis police officer described an incident Tuesday afternoon in the 1400 block of South Talbott Street, just south of downtown.
What started as a fistfight involving a group of young adults ended with three of them going to the hospital with gunshot wounds. All are expected to recover.
According to Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Public Information Officer Genae Cook, police were called to the scene by residents who heard about one dozen gunshots.
"This was an arranged fight, a fistfight between parties who arranged it. They had an agreement that there were no guns," said Cook. But one person did have a gun and began shooting.
Police have not determined exactly how many people were involved beyond the three who were wounded. "I can't explain how much that an incident like this can be done by adults. All parties involved are adults and they were acting like children," said Cook.
Two people were arrested and others could be charged. And, as Cook pointed out, valuable police resources were needed at the scene, meaning those officers were not free to patrol other areas.
