David Letterman makes surprise appearance at Ball State

MUNCIE, Ind. -- Students and staff at Ball State University got quite the surprise Wednesday when David Letterman was spotted walking around his alma mater. 

Letterman, who graduated from Ball State University in 1969 was on campus to meet with graduate students in the Emerging Media Design and Development program. 

He also paid a visit to his namesake building: The David Letterman Communication and Media Building. 

Letterman donated more than 1,000 memorabilia items - including 15 Emmy Awards he won as talk show host - to Ball State University.

Letterman signed off in 2015 as host of CBS' "Late Show." He hosted NBC's "Late Night" from 1982 to 1993.
