Muncie Community Schools eliminating dozens of teachers

Elementary, health, social studies teachers cut

MUNCIE, Ind.—  Muncie Community Schools is eliminating dozens of teachers in an effort to save the district $1.8 million, RTV6 has learned.

During the June 29 school board meeting, the school board approved eliminating 25 positions and issuing 3 RIF (Reduction in Force) notices.

Records show the positions include 10 elementary school teachers, guidance counselors, science and social studies teachers, PE/health teachers, a special ed resource teacher, a French teacher, and an IT academy instructor.

The salaries of the eliminated positions ranged from $33,000 to $80,878, records show.

Last year, dozens of Muncie teachers resigned as the district faced an $11 million deficit.

The embattled district has already closed three elementary schools as part of their deficit-reduction plan.

In May, the Ball State University Board of Trustees voted to accept the responsibility and takeover of Muncie Community Schools.

“Ball State has a long history as a national leader in education innovation and civic engagement," said Rick Hall, chair of the Board of Trustees. "At the same time, we strongly believe in the power of education and the collective ability of our community. Today, we have once again combined our talents and values in the most meaningful of ways – to better the future of the children in Muncie and Indiana.”
